James Arends received his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta in 1986 and his Bachelor of Laws and Master of Business Administration from Dalhousie University in 1990.

He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1991 and in 1996 he opened Arends & Company. Over the next 25 years, Mr. Arends supervised 4 articling students-at-law, who all became Associates at his law firm.

For several years Mr. Arends was a lecturer at Concordia University of Edmonton where he taught courses in law and public policy. For 13 years Mr. Arends was a board member of the Alberta SPCA, serving as its President for 6 years.

Mr. Arends is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and the Law Society of Alberta. He is also a member of the Trial Lawyers Association of BC, the Criminal Trial Lawyers’ Association, and the Criminal Lawyers’ Association.

His practice is restricted to defending clients who have been charged with criminal offenses. He has appeared thousands of times in both Provincial Court and Superior Court as defense counsel and duty counsel.
